LET'S TALK

Is it them or me?

Meredith longs to have the joy of a sustained, committed, lasting marriage with a man.

Since her divorce from her children’s father 10 years ago, she’s been in and out of relationships – some committed, some not so much.

She longs to experience the joy of companionship that she witnesses between older couples walking hand in hand, gazing affectionately at one another. Yet, she finds herself repeating the same patterns of dysfunction permeating her relationships since the divorce.

As a result of these failures, she wonders, “What’s wrong with me? I used to be so confident and sure of myself.”

Meredith kept settling for second best.

Meredith has become increasingly aware of feeling more addicted to the highs and lows of being with someone who keeps her guessing all the time. At the same time, she knows that focusing too much on that unbalanced relationship can create difficulties concentrating on work or her kids.

When remembering a boyfriend, she always focused only on their good qualities and increasingly elevated their talents and abilities, while underestimating her own. She would develop feelings of anxiousness that only diminished when they were in contact.

She even went as far as falling into the trap of believing that this was her only chance for love, rationalizing that since she’s only compatible with a few, what were the chances of finding another guy like him?

That rationalization made her lament, “What if I end up alone?” Therefore, she tended to hold fast to the lie she had created to the point that it took years to find someone new.

Her behavior became more dysfunctional.

Before working with me, Meredith found herself resorting to dysfunctional patterns, driving her deeper into despair and feelings of powerlessness, which she was humiliated by.

For example, she would act busy and unapproachable, ignoring his phone calls and claiming she was busy when she wasn’t.

She kept score of how long it took him to return her phone calls and waited just as long to return his.

She would even go as far as hanging out with friends to make him jealous, bragging about other guys hitting on her.

She was at her wits’ end.

Meredith needed help to regain her confidence. During TheraCoaching sessions, we explored the root causes of and cleared Meredith’s faulty beliefs contributing to her low sense of worthiness in her relationships.

Over time, she was able to rebuild her confidence back to where it once was decades ago, before the downward spiral into insecurity and despair began.

We then worked on strengthening her relationship skills, empowering her to cultivate deep connections. She learned to communicate authentically and collaboratively resolve conflicts.
